Help & FAQ
Joining an event, requesting songs, and running the queue.
Joining and requesting songs
For guests at an event.
How do I join an event?
Scan the QR code at the event, or go to tellthedj.com and type the DJ code you were given. It’s 4–12 letters and numbers, like K7QX2M. You don’t need an account.
In the app, open the ⋯ menu on the first screen and choose Join an event as a participant.
Where do I get a DJ code?
From the DJ or the host of the event. It’s usually printed on the QR code sign. Codes belong to one event, and there’s no list of them, so you can’t look one up.
How do I request a song?
- Read the short rules reminder and tap the button to continue.
- Pick the channel your headphones are on.
- Start typing the song or the artist. Matching songs appear under the form with the artist, album and length. Tap one to fill it in, or just keep typing your own.
- Send it.
Your requests are listed under the form, and each one shows its status.
Why is a song greyed out in the search?
It breaks one of this event’s rules, and a small tag says which. It might be the explicit version, a song that isn’t worship or Christian music, one that’s too slow, or one that’s too long. Greyed-out songs can’t be selected. If a Clean version of the same song is listed, pick that one. Otherwise, try a different song.
If you don’t see the song at all, type it in yourself. Anything you type can still be sent, and the DJ will take a look.
What are channels?
Some events play several channels at once, such as separate headphone channels, each with its own music. They’re colour-coded (Red, Green and Blue by default). Pick the channel you’re listening to so your request goes to the right queue.
What do the statuses mean?
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Waiting… | The DJ hasn’t looked at it yet. |
| Approved | It’s in line. Its spot is on the Up Next board. |
| Last song | It’s the final song on that channel. |
| Played | It has played. |
| Denied | The DJ passed on it. Send another song. |
| Out of time | The channel ran out of time before the DJ could get to it. |
Where can I see what’s coming up?
Tap See the Up Next board on the request page. It shows the approved songs and their place in line on every channel, so you don’t need to walk up and ask the DJ.
Why was my song denied?
DJs turn down songs that are explicit or don’t fit the event. Clean versions and edits are usually fine. It isn’t personal. Send another one.
Can I request more than one song?
Yes. Each request is reviewed on its own, and the DJ decides what plays and in what order.
It says “The disco starts soon” or “Requests are closed.”
The DJ sets when requests open and close. Before the start time you’ll see a countdown, and the form opens by itself when it hits zero. After the close time, or if the DJ ended requests early, requests are closed. Ask the DJ if you think that’s a mistake.
It says the event isn’t open, or the code doesn’t match.
Check the code for typos. If it’s right and you see “isn’t open for requests right now,” the event exists but the DJ hasn’t gone live yet, or it already ended. Try again in a few minutes.
What information do you collect from guests?
Only what you type into a request: the song, the artist and the channel, plus when you sent it. There are no names, emails or accounts for guests.
Running an event (for DJs)
For DJs and volunteers who run the queue.
How do I get started?
- Go to tellthedj.com/dj (or open the app) and choose Create account.
- Pick a username (3–32 letters, numbers, dots, dashes or underscores) and a password of at least 8 characters.
- Create your first event in the app (see the next question).
Your events belong to your account. No one else can see them or change them.
How do I create an event?
You can do this in the app or on the website. In the app, tap + (or Create an event) on the Events screen. On the website, sign in at tellthedj.com/dj and tap + New event. Then set:
- Event name, shown to guests at the top of the request page.
- Channels, up to 6. Tap one to rename it or change its colour.
- Request times: an optional start countdown and an optional automatic close time.
- Rules, up to 12, that guests see in a popup before their first request.
- Explicit songs and the DJ password for the show.
Save it and it shows up under Upcoming.
How do I change an event’s settings later?
Tap the settings wheel (a small gear) on the event, in the app or on the website’s Events list. It works for the event that’s live right now and for upcoming ones. You can change everything: name, channels, rules, explicit songs, request times, the DJ password, and the DJ code with its QR code.
Changes to the live event show up for guests right away. Ended events are read-only.
Where is my DJ code, and how do guests use it?
Open any event’s settings (the gear, in the app or on the website) and look under DJ code. Every event gets a random 6-letter code automatically. From there you can:
- copy the code, or share the guest link
tellthedj.com/c/YOURCODE; - Choose your own code (4–12 letters or numbers, and no one else can already be using it);
- Make a new random code. The old code stops working right away.
The app and the website also draw a QR code right there, and it changes the moment the code changes. Tap Copy image or Save / Download image to put it on a sign or a slide. It keeps working for as long as the code does.
Anyone who has the code can send requests to that event, so share it with your guests only.
Can my rules change which songs guests can pick?
Yes. In the event’s settings (the gear, in the app or on the website), the Song list section turns rules into filters. A song that breaks one shows up greyed out in the guest’s search, with a short reason, and the server turns it away if someone types it in by hand and it’s a song it knows.
- Block explicit songs (on by default). If a clean version exists, it’s listed and works. Matches the family-friendly rule.
- Worship and Christian music only. Songs from other genres are greyed out. Matches the worship rule.
- No slow songs. Songs under 100 beats per minute are greyed out. Matches the no slow songs rule.
- Longest song allowed, from 3 to 8 minutes.
- One request at a time. A guest can’t send another request until their last one is played or the DJ passes on it. Matches the one request at a time rule.
Checking one of the preset rules turns its filter on, and flipping a filter ticks its rule, so guests always see what’s being enforced. For a rule you type yourself, choose what it should do to the song list (or nothing). Changes take effect as soon as you save, even during a live event.
A few honest limits: genre and tempo come from Apple Music and Deezer, so a song whose genre or tempo isn’t known yet stays selectable until it’s looked up (it’s usually quick), and some songs never get a tempo. Songs the search has never heard of can’t be checked at all, so you’ll still see those in your queue and can deny them. “One request at a time” checks the guest’s own phone, so it’s a friendly limit, not a lock.
How do I go live?
Open an upcoming event and tap Go live in the app. You can also tap Go live on the website’s Events list after signing in at tellthedj.com/dj.
Only one event can be live at a time. Going live ends the current one and moves it to Archived with all its requests. Guests whose code belongs to an event that isn’t live see “isn’t open for requests right now.”
Before the event: what should I check?
Set up about 30 minutes before doors open.
- Open the live event’s DJ Console (tap Open console on the website’s Events list, or open the live event in the app). A green “live” dot with updating instantly means you’re connected: new requests show up the moment guests send them, with no refreshing.
- Make sure every channel says Nothing waiting. If old songs are left over, export them and clear them (see “End of the night”).
- Set Requests open at and press Set start time. Guests see a countdown until then.
- Set Requests close at and press Set close time.
- If requests show as closed from earlier, press Reopen requests. To open right away with no start time, press Open requests now.
- Scan your own QR code with a phone and make sure the request page loads.
The panel at the top always shows the state: a green Requests open or a red Requests closed tag.
During the event: how do I handle requests?
Each new request appears under its channel within a few seconds. Give each one a decision:
- Approve with ✓ if it’s clean and fits. The guest sees “Approved” and the song goes on the Up Next board in the order it came in.
- Deny with ✗ if it’s explicit or doesn’t fit. It leaves your list and the guest is invited to send another.
- Queue the approved songs in your DJ software for that channel, in the order the Up Next board shows.
- Press Played when it’s done. It leaves your console and the board.
In the app you can also swipe a request: swipe right to approve, swipe left to mark it played or deny it. Keep the console open all night. It refreshes by itself.
How do I wrap up a channel (last song and bumping)?
When a channel is close to the end of its time, pick one request as its last song. Each channel is wrapped up on its own.
- Press 🏁 on the song you want to end with and confirm. The box tells you how many requests came in before and after it.
- The last song is approved automatically, moves to the end of the line and gets a gold LAST SONG tag.
- Songs requested after it are marked out of time. Guests see “Out of time” and you don’t have to do anything with them.
- Songs requested before it stay in line and still get played. If you can’t fit one in, press ⏱ to bump it (press again to undo). That guest sees “Out of time.”
- New requests stop for that channel, and guests see it greyed out as “Last song queued.” Other channels stay open.
Marked the wrong song? Press 🏁 on it again to remove the mark and reopen the channel.
End of the night: what do I do?
- Closing early: press End requests now and confirm. Guests see that requests are closed. Reopen requests undoes it. Otherwise requests close by themselves at your close time.
- Finish the queue: keep pressing Played until every channel says Nothing waiting.
- Save the list: press Export CSV for a spreadsheet of every request from the night.
- Clear the console: press Clear all and confirm. This empties the console, the Up Next board and guests’ request lists. Nothing is lost: the requests are kept with the event.
- End the event: in the app, swipe the live event on the Events screen and tap Archive. On the website, tap End event. It moves to Archived with every request, and guests see that requests are closed.
Can I look at an old event, or run it again?
Yes. Ended events stay under Archived with all their requests. Open one to read the list or export it as a CSV. Swipe it and tap Restore to bring it back, or use Use as template to start a new event with the same setup.
Delete forever removes an event and its requests for good, and that can’t be undone.
Can my volunteers use the DJ Console?
Yes. Give them your username and password, and they can sign in on their own phone or computer at tellthedj.com/dj or in the app. Everyone signed in sees the same live queue. Anyone with your username and password can run and change your events, so only share it with people you trust. You can sign out of a device at any time with Lock on the website or Sign out in the app.

Accounts and privacy
Passwords, codes and who can see what.
Who can see or change my events?
Only people signed in to your DJ account. Guests with your DJ code can send requests to that one event while it’s live. They can’t see the DJ Console or your other events, and they can’t change anything.
I forgot my password.
There isn’t an automatic reset yet. Contact whoever runs tellthedj.com for your event (at Central Bible Church, the production team) and they can help you get back in.
How long do I stay signed in?
About 90 days on each device, unless you sign out first.
Somebody has my DJ code and I don’t want them to.
Open the event in the app and tap Make a new random code. The old code stops working immediately, so share the new one only with the people you want.
Troubleshooting
When something looks off.
A button didn’t seem to work.
Wait a few seconds for the list to refresh before pressing again. Pressing twice can undo what you just did.
Guests say requests are closed.
Check the tag at the top of the console. If it says closed, or the close time has passed, press Reopen requests.
Guests see “The disco starts soon.”
A start time is set. Press Open requests now, or wait for the countdown to finish.
A channel is greyed out for guests.
That channel has a last song set. Press 🏁 on the last song again to reopen it.
The console says “reconnecting…”
It lost its live connection to the server. Check the Wi-Fi or cellular connection. It reconnects on its own once it can, and it keeps checking every few seconds in the meantime.
The page asks me to sign in again.
You were signed out (you pressed Lock or Sign out, or the sign-in expired). Sign in again. Nothing is lost.
Something else is wrong.
Reload the page, or pull down to refresh in the app. Requests are saved on the server, so nothing is lost. If it still looks wrong, contact whoever set up your event.
Nothing matches that. Try a different word.
